Sport-Specific Training: Who Actually Needs It, and Who Just Needs to Get Stronger
Sport-specific training is one of the most oversold phrases in the industry. The research on specificity is more interesting than the marketing, and far more useful if you are deciding what an athlete should actually do this month.
Specificity, transfer and training age
The short answer. Sport-specific training is real, but it is narrower than the phrase suggests. Specificity governs how closely a training stimulus matches the demands of the event, and it shapes what adapts. It does not mean useful training has to look like the sport. The first question worth asking in one-to-one coaching in Alpharetta is whether an athlete is limited by general strength, power and tissue capacity or by something genuinely sport-specific, because the answer changes the program. Specific work tends to earn its place once the underlying capacity is there and the training history can support it.
What specificity actually means
In the strength and conditioning literature, specificity is a technical idea rather than a slogan. It refers to "the degree of bioenergetics and biomechanical similarity between training modes and methods, and performance," and it is a primary factor dictating which adaptations follow a given stimulus (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022).
The same review lays out the dynamic correspondence framework, which breaks specificity into components a coach can manipulate: the amplitude and direction of movement, the accentuated region of force production, the dynamics of effort, the rate and timing of maximum force production, and the arrangement of muscular work (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022). None of those five require the exercise to resemble the sport visually, because they are mechanical properties rather than visual ones, which is why a movement can look nothing like a golf swing or a pickleball split step and still correspond to it in the ways that matter (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022).
That review also names the tension coaches live with: overload, the accumulation of work that builds capacities, "seems to be at odds with the concept of specificity" (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022). Both cannot be maximized at once, which is why programs are sequenced. General work earns its place because it transfers: resistance training raises maximum strength, rate of force development and power, and changes in those qualities have been associated with improved jump, sprint and change-of-direction performance, described in that review as a substantial transfer-of-training effect (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022).
A second argument for general strength has nothing to do with performance. In a meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials covering 26,610 participants and 3,464 injuries, strength training was associated with a relative risk of sports injury of 0.315, and overuse injuries with a relative risk of 0.527, while stretching alone showed no beneficial effect (Lauersen and colleagues, British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2014). Those trials were run in athletic populations generally rather than in any one sport or age group, so the direction of the finding is more dependable than the precise number (Lauersen and colleagues, British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2014).
Transfer is not the same as imitation
A recurring temptation is imitation: taking the sport skill, adding external load, and assuming the loaded version trains the unloaded one.
Sometimes that works. Sometimes it buys performance at a price. In a randomized study of 38 baseball pitchers aged 13 to 18, a six-week weighted-ball throwing program raised pitch velocity by 3.3% and passive shoulder external rotation by 4.3 degrees. It also produced a 24% injury rate in the experimental group, including four elbow injuries, while no control pitcher was injured (Reinold and colleagues, Sports Health, 2018).
That result should not be stretched into a claim that loaded skill drills damage technique in general, because the study did not test that (Reinold and colleagues, Sports Health, 2018). The narrower reading is more useful: a loaded skill drill is an intervention with its own risk profile, and it deserves a better justification than resembling the sport.
Junior athletes: training age, not birthdays
Aeon trains junior athletes, and age is usually the first question. The evidence points somewhere more useful.
The NSCA position statement on youth resistance training concludes that "a properly designed and supervised resistance training program is relatively safe for youth," that the inherent risk "is no greater than many other sports and recreational activities in which children and adolescents regularly participate," and that risk "can be minimized by qualified supervision, appropriate program design, sensible progression, and careful selection of training equipment" (NSCA youth resistance training position statement).
Two qualifications matter as much as that headline. The statement is conditional: where qualified supervision, age-appropriate equipment and a safe environment are not available, it says youth should not perform resistance exercise because injury risk increases, and it adds that "children and adolescents must not be treated as miniature adults" (NSCA youth resistance training position statement). Its low reported injury risk also comes from prospective studies where programs were supervised and matched to each participant's initial capacity, which is not the same as saying a weight room is risk-free (NSCA youth resistance training position statement).
An AOSSM consensus statement adds the developmental point directly: "chronological age is not equal to developmental age" (AOSSM Early Sport Specialization Consensus Statement). Training age, movement competence and current load tell you more about what an athlete is ready for than a date of birth does.
Specialization and playing volume
The NSCA frames youth training as long-term athletic development, arguing that all youth should be viewed as athletes and developed individually, and noting that appropriate prescription matters most for young athletes who are underprepared and at risk of overuse injury because of high competition volume and an absence of preparatory conditioning (NSCA long-term athletic development position statement).
On specialization, the AOSSM consensus applies three criteria together: intensive organized training or competition for more than eight months per year, participation in one sport to the exclusion of others, and involvement of prepubertal children around age twelve. It concludes that early specialization has been associated with increased rates of overuse injury, burnout, decreased motivation and sports withdrawal, and that the evidence for it as a general requirement for elite performance is not convincing in sports where peak performance arrives in adulthood (AOSSM Early Sport Specialization Consensus Statement).
Playing volume is the most actionable variable here. In a longitudinal study of young athletes, those whose weekly organized sport hours exceeded their chronological age had higher odds of all injuries (OR 1.71) and of overuse injuries (OR 1.68), and the authors also flagged exceeding a 2:1 ratio of organized sport hours to free play (Jayanthi and colleagues, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 2020). In the multivariable model that hours-exceeding-age association for overuse injury was no longer statistically significant, so it is a signal to watch rather than a hard threshold (Jayanthi and colleagues, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 2020).
Who is likely to need sport-specific work
These are editorial criteria we find useful, not research findings, and an individual assessment can override any of them:
- A competitive standard to hit on a schedule, so the calendar constrains what can be trained and when.
- General strength and power already adequate for the event, so directing capacity is the remaining lever.
- A distinctive mechanical demand that general training does not cover, describable in the dynamic correspondence terms above rather than as a vibe.
- A coach available to supervise the specific work closely, because that is where technique and load interact most.
When those conditions are absent, the more reliable path is usually general capacity: getting stronger, moving better and controlling deceleration. Whether that applies to a particular adult or junior is an assessment question rather than a rule.
The limits of all of this
Transfer is inferred rather than guaranteed. Most of the evidence is an association between improved physical qualities and improved performance measures, and adaptations differ substantially even between strength-power athletes training in different ways (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022).
The youth injury literature is reassuring about supervised programs rather than about weight rooms in general, and its conclusion is explicitly conditional on supervision, program design and equipment (NSCA youth resistance training position statement). The specialization evidence is largely observational, and the AOSSM statement notes that studies directly linking specialization to psychosocial outcomes are lacking (AOSSM Early Sport Specialization Consensus Statement).

Where the limiter is capacity, the program looks like strength, power, mobility and deceleration work. Is sport-specific training better than general strength training?
They answer different questions. General strength and power work builds the capacity an athlete has to spend, and that capacity transfers broadly: resistance training improvements in strength and rate of force development have been associated with better jumping, sprinting and change-of-direction performance (Suchomel and colleagues, Sports, 2022). Sport-specific work directs that capacity toward the movement demands of the event. An athlete short on strength usually gets more from the first.
At what age can a young athlete start resistance training?
There is no single number, and readiness matters more than a birthday. The NSCA position statement concludes that a properly designed and supervised resistance training program is relatively safe for youth and that there are no justifiable safety reasons that preclude children or adolescents from participating, provided qualified supervision, appropriate equipment and sensible progression are in place (NSCA youth resistance training position statement). Does early specialization in one sport help a young athlete get better faster?
The consensus evidence does not support it as a general requirement. Is adding load to a sport skill a good way to make the skill better?
Sometimes, and sometimes at a cost. In a randomized study of 38 baseball pitchers, a six-week weighted-ball throwing program raised pitch velocity by 3.3% but was accompanied by a 24% injury rate in the experimental group, with no injuries in the control group (Reinold and colleagues, Sports Health, 2018). That is one sport and one protocol, not a universal rule, but it is a good reason to treat loaded skill work as a decision rather than a default.
How do you decide what a junior athlete works on first?
From an assessment, a training history and a conversation about how much sport they are already playing. Volume matters: in a longitudinal study of young athletes, those whose weekly organized sport hours exceeded their age had higher odds of injury overall (OR 1.71) and of overuse injury (OR 1.68) (Jayanthi and colleagues, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 2020). Knowing the existing load usually changes the plan more than knowing the sport.
